Crew Communication
Definition
The members of a show crew mostly cannot see each other, so they coordinate through communication systems. Wired intercom gives the fixed positions constant hands-free contact: director or stage manager, audio, lighting, video and follow-spot operators. A partyline system places every station on a shared channel, commonly over 3-pin XLR cable that also powers the beltpacks, while a matrix system routes individual calls between any two stations or groups. Wireless beltpacks extend the intercom to people who need to move, and two-way radios cover the wider crew, from load-in to security. Each group of people is assigned a system and a channel, and a message is sent on the channel of the people it concerns.

The guide
Intercom and radio procedure relies on short, clear and addressed messages. As in standard radio procedure, the caller names the recipient before the message, for example "Spot 2, pick up the soloist", so that the right person listens. Messages are kept short so that the channel is free for the next call, and the recipient acknowledges, for example with "copy", so that the sender knows the message was received. Show channels are kept free of unrelated conversation so that cue calls and safety calls are heard.
Poor communication leads to missed cues and contradictory instructions, and around rigging and power it creates safety risks.
The rule
A call on comms names its recipient, carries one short message and is acknowledged.
