Dante / AES67 Interop
Definition
Dante devices connect to non-Dante equipment, such as Ravenna devices, Q-SYS systems and some broadcast infrastructure, by sending and receiving AES67 flows. AES67 mode is enabled device by device in Dante Controller. In this mode, Dante transmits AES67 flows in multicast only, at 48 kHz, on multicast addresses in the 239.69.0.0/16 range, and the device clock uses PTPv2 in addition to PTPv1. A device in AES67 mode is limited to 48 kHz for its Dante flows as well. AES67 flows do not carry Dante device names or automatic routing, so they are subscribed by stream rather than by device and channel name.
In the field
Bridging Dante to a Q-SYS core or a Ravenna system over AES67 works, but Dante discovery does not extend to the other system, and streams are often connected by multicast address or SDP description. Both networks are first set to the same PTPv2 domain number, because devices in different domains do not synchronise with each other. The grandmaster shared by both systems is usually chosen deliberately rather than left to election.
