AES67

Definition

AES67 is an Audio Engineering Society standard for interoperability between audio-over-IP systems, first published in 2013 and revised since. It allows devices from different families, such as Dante, Ravenna, Livewire and Q-LAN, to exchange audio streams. The standard defines the transport (RTP over UDP/IP, in multicast or unicast), synchronisation by PTPv2 (IEEE 1588-2008) and session description by SDP, and it leaves discovery and connection management largely to each implementation. Every compliant device supports a mandatory base configuration of 48 kHz sampling, linear audio on 16 or 24 bits, a 1 ms packet time and streams of 1 to 8 channels. Other sample rates, such as 96 kHz, and other packet times are optional.

In the field

AES67 allows a Dante console to receive audio from a Ravenna stage box, and the reverse. On the Dante side, AES67 mode is enabled device by device in Dante Controller, and both systems are set to the same PTPv2 domain. Discovery differs between families, so streams are often connected by entering a multicast address or an SDP description by hand, and the configuration is usually tested before the event.
