RDM — Remote Device Management

Definition

RDM (Remote Device Management) is a bidirectional extension of DMX512, standardised as ANSI E1.20, that lets a controller communicate with the fixtures on a DMX line. The controller can discover devices and their addresses automatically, read their status (lamp hours, temperature, error reports) and change parameters remotely. RDM requires a compatible controller and compatible fixtures. It runs over standard DMX cabling, but every splitter or buffer on the line has to be RDM-capable so that the responses can travel back to the controller.

In the field

RDM can save hours of manual addressing during the build. Some DMX splitters pass data in one direction only and block RDM responses, so the specifications of the distribution equipment are checked before RDM is relied on across it.
