Network Redundancy
Definition
Network redundancy provides backup paths so that the failure of one cable or one switch does not stop the system. Dante redundancy uses two networks, primary and secondary, connected to separate interfaces on each device; the audio travels on both, and a receiver continues on the secondary network if the primary fails. The Yamaha Dante Accelerator manual specifies that the primary and secondary networks must not be connected to each other at any point. RSTP provides a different kind of redundancy, inside a single switched network, by reopening a blocked link after a failure.
In the field
Audinate and switch manufacturers recommend separate physical switches for the primary and secondary networks. A primary and a secondary network carried on two VLANs of the same switch protect against a cut cable or a failed port, but a failure of that switch stops both networks, so its chassis remains a single point of failure.
