Lighting
Art-Net
Definition
Art-Net is a royalty-free protocol, published by Artistic Licence, that carries DMX512 data over IP networks in UDP, by broadcast or unicast. A universe is identified by a Port-Address calculated as Net (0 to 127) × 256 + SubNet (0 to 15) × 16 + Universe (0 to 15), which gives a value from 0 to 32767. In broadcast mode every packet reaches every device on the subnet. This causes no difficulty on a small rig but loads the whole network when many universes are sent.
In the field
On a large rig, Art-Net broadcast carrying many universes is delivered to every device on the subnet, including audio equipment such as Dante devices that share the network. The usual remedies are Art-Net unicast, a move to sACN or a separate VLAN for lighting data.
